Machining wood and panels

Solid wood, plywood, MDF and panels: cutting in one pass with clean edges on both faces.

From plywood to solid wood

Wood machining is an extremely broad field, due to the variety of species. Equipped with a 9 kW spindle, VERSO machines cut panels and solid wood with very satisfactory results, provided a suitable cutter is used.

Shown here: a vanity top in 32 mm solid rubberwood (hevea).

Tool

The compression bit: clean edges on both faces

The so-called compression bit has a right-hand helix at the bottom and a left-hand helix at the top. It therefore never pulls the material outwards from the panel and gives a perfect surface finish at the cut, on both the top and bottom faces. It is the reference tool for cutting plywood without chipping.

MDF is extremely easy and fast to cut.

  • Tropical: teak, iroko, sapele, wenge

Panels

  • Plywood: okoumé, birch, poplar
  • MDF, chipboard, OSB

VSR and LT

Wood and other materials in a single job

Since wood is machined with milling cutters, the LT, equipped with the same 9 kW spindle, works it under the same conditions as the VSR.

The VSR goes further by combining wood with other materials: shown here, a letter in solid rubberwood with a knife-cut leather insert. VERSO customers also make ski bases with marquetry.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ – Wood and panels

With a compression bit: right-hand helix at the bottom and left-hand helix at the top. It never pulls the material outwards from the panel and gives a perfect surface finish on both the top and bottom faces.

As an indication, on a VERSO machine: a single pass, 8 mm compression bit, spindle at 18,000 rpm, feed rate of 10,000 to 15,000 mm/min.

Softwoods (pine, fir, spruce, larch, Douglas fir), hardwoods (oak, beech, ash, walnut, maple, cherry, rubberwood), tropical woods (teak, iroko, sapele, wenge), panels (plywood, MDF, chipboard, OSB, glulam, 3-ply panels), laminates and melamine panels, wood-plastic composites, as well as veneers and marquetry.

Yes, wood is machined with milling cutters: the LT, equipped with the same 9 kW spindle, works wood under the same conditions as the VSR.
